Housing Opportunities in the Inland Empire

(Riverside) – On behalf of Business Transportation and Housing Agency Secretary Sunne Wright McPeak, California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) Acting Director Judy Nevis today announced over $13.1 million in Proposition 46 funds to Inland Empire communities. The awards provide housing opportunities for more than 300 of California’s hardworking families and neediest residents. Proposition 46 is the $2.1 billion housing bond approved by voters in November 2002.
"Gov. Schwarzenegger is committed to making affordable housing a reality for all Californians," said Secretary McPeak. "Today’s awards will help 313 families or individuals achieve the dream while supporting local economies through construction related activities and the jobs they create."
Awards were made through the following HCD programs:
- $8.3 million in awards through the Multifamily Housing Program. The awards will help 152 California families or individuals realize the dream of an affordable rental home.
- $2.8 million through the CalHome Building Equity and Growth in Neighborhoods Program (BEGIN). The grants are for down payment assistance loans to low- and moderate-income first-time buyers of 93 homes in BEGIN projects.
- $2 million in CalHome Program. These awards will help 68 families realize this dream.
"Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation’s CalHome Funds have made a dramatic change in Robin Kim’s life because she was able to purchase her "1st home with the help from the Homeownership Center! This is a dream come true" she commented."
The CalHome Funds from Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation gave the Fenske family a wisp of hope, as Stephen says, "the organization is head and shoulders above the rest. The [home buying] process wasn’t simple. There were obstacles, but we stuck with it and qualified for a loan that allowed us to buy a home that meets the needs of our growing family."
The Alvarado’s dream came true with the help of Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation’s Cal Home Funds which aided them in time of need and now Jose (Father) states, "Our children are very happy. Muy contentos. Everything is better because we are comfortable, and the children have rooms of their own." Jose also, stated that without the help of Cal Home funds "the payments I make are a form of savings, an investment, and not rent."
