The Department of Housing and Community Development Awards
$5.9 Million in Proposition 46 Funding
to Create Housing Opportunities
in the Sacramento/Stockton Region

Awardees

(Sacramento) – On behalf of Business, Transportation and Housing Agency Secretary Sunne Wright McPeak, California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) Acting Director Judy Nevis today announced over $5.9 million in Proposition 46 funds to Sacramento/Stockton area communities. The awards provide funding for new housing opportunities for more than 147 of California’s hardworking families and neediest residents. Proposition 46 is the $2.1 billion housing bond approved by voters in November 2002.

"Gov. Schwarzenegger is committed to making affordable housing a reality for all Californians," said Secretary McPeak. "Today’s awards will help 147 families achieve the dream of an affordable home while supporting local economies through construction related activities and the jobs they create."

Awards were made through the following HCD programs:

  • $3 million in CalHome Program awards to local governments and non-profit organizations to promote homeownership opportunities for first-time homebuyers through the acquisition of new or resale homes. CalHome also provides funds to allow lower income families, including the elderly, to become homeowners or remain in their homes through the rehabilitation of their existing homes. These awards will help 92 families realize this dream.
  • $2.3 million in awards through the Multifamily Housing Program will provide permanent low-interest loans for the construction of new affordable apartment homes and rehabilitation of existing affordable units. Californians who make up the vital workforce that is the backbone of our economy, seniors, the disabled, homeless and those transitioning from homelessness, are among the future residents of the homes that will be constructed or rehabilitated. The awards will help 34 California families or individuals realize the dream of an affordable rental home.
  • $615,850 through the CalHome Building Equity and Growth in Neighborhoods Program (BEGIN), which makes grants to cities and counties that have reduced regulatory barriers to the construction of new, affordable ownership housing. Barriers can include such constraints as minimum lot or floor area sizes that make housing more expensive. The grants are for down payment assistance loans to low- and moderate-income first-time buyers of 21 homes in BEGIN projects.

"Proposition 46-funded programs have had a positive impact on our efforts to create affordable housing. Community Housing Opportunities Corporation (CHOC) has used Proposition 46-funded programs to over 300 units of affordable housing in Sacramento, Woodland, Davis, Winters and Chico. Many of these units would not have been produced without funding from Proposition 46-funded programs."

"The Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency is extremely pleased to be selected as a recipient of the CalHome program funding award. Last year, these funds allowed the Agency to help 34 low-income families in Sacramento realize the dream of first time homeownership and to improve their homes. In today's housing market, the CalHome program is a valuable tool to close the financing gap which prevents many deserving families from experiencing the security and stability that comes with owning a home".
