$73.9 Million in Proposition 46 Funds to Create Housing Opportunities in the San Francisco
Bay Area

Awardees

(San Francisco) – On behalf of Business, Transportation and Housing Agency Secretary, Sunne Wright McPeak, California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) Acting Director Judy Nevis today announced over $73.9 million in Proposition 46 funds to Bay Area counties. The awards provide funding for new housing opportunities for more than 1,000 of California’s hardworking families and neediest residents. Proposition 46 is the $2.1 billion housing bond approved by voters in November 2002.

"Gov. Schwarzenegger is committed to making affordable housing a reality for all Californians," said Secretary McPeak. "Today’s awards will help families achieve the dream of an affordable home and will support local economies with construction related activities and the jobs they create."

Awards were made through the following HCD programs:

  • $68.2 million in awards through the Multifamily Housing Program. The awards will help 846 California families or individuals realize the dream of an affordable rental home.
  • $2.8 million in CalHome Program. These awards will help 62 families realize this dream.
  • $2.6 million through the CalHome Building Equity and Growth in Neighborhoods Program (BEGIN). The grants are for down payment assistance loans to low- and moderate-income first-time buyers of 88 homes in BEGIN projects.
  • $300,000 through the CalHome Self-Help Technical Assistance Allocation (CHSHTAA) for the development of 34 homes for low or very low income households using the hands-on self-help method of building their own homes.

"The awards announced today will provide California’s essential workforce and their families the safe and affordable housing they urgently need to live and work in their communities," said Acting Director Nevis. "Local communities which remove regulatory barriers to the production of affordable ownership housing are also rewarded," said Acting Director Nevis.

"We are utilizing millions of dollars in Proposition 46 funds to create affordable housing for seniors, families, households with special needs, and housing for formerly homeless seniors and families. These funds not only enable us to offer housing at deeply affordable levels, many of our developments would not have even been viable without Proposition 46 loans."

"CalHome funds will play a critical role in helping the City rehabilitate homes where major neighborhood revitalization and community building is most needed. The Strong Neighborhood Initiative (SNI) is a partnership between the City, the Redevelopment Agency, and the Community to build clean, safe, and attractive neighborhoods that foster strong, independent, and capable neighborhood organizations. These neighborhoods place home rehabilitation as a top ten priority to improve the quality of life in their community. CalHome funds will help us address the health, safety and beautification needs for low income homeowners in SNI areas.

The BEGIN funds will help 31 low- and moderate-income first-time homebuyers achieve the dream of homeownership in the City of San Jose. We are proud of the City's commitment and continued investment in the development of new affordable for-sale housing in redevelopment areas throughout the City."
