$13.1 Million in Proposition 46 Funding to Create
Housing Opportunities in the San Diego Region

Awardees

(Santee, San Diego County) – On behalf of Business Transportation and Housing Agency Secretary Sunne Wright McPeak, California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) Acting Director Judy Nevis today announced over $19 million in Proposition 46 funds to San Diego communities. The awards provide housing opportunities for more than 300 of California’s hardworking families and neediest residents. Proposition 46 is the $2.1 billion housing bond approved by voters in November 2002.

"Gov. Schwarzenegger is committed to making affordable housing a reality for all Californians," said Secretary McPeak. "Today’s awards will help 334 families or individuals achieve the dream while supporting local economies through construction related activities and the jobs they create."

Awards were made through the following HCD programs:

  • $17.8 million in awards through the Multifamily Housing Program. The awards will help 296 California families or individuals realize the dream of an affordable rental home.
  • $1.2 million in CalHome Program awards. These awards will help 38 families realize this dream.

"Proposition 46 funding allows the affordable developer to provide market rate quality housing to very low income families in new communities with the finest in facilities–new schools, new parks and recreational facilities. Multifamily housing in new master planned communities gives low income families an environment that is safe and nurtures educational opportunities.

Proposition 46 funded programs play a critical role in successfully financing small affordable housing projects serving Special Needs Populations like Single-Parent Households, Homeless Persons and Developmentally Disable Households that typically live on incomes below the poverty level. Without Multifamily Housing Program Loan subsidies these needy populations would not be served."

"The CalHome program is one of the few remaining avenues for lower-income families to purchase a home in Orange County. The CalHome grant funds are loaned by Neighborhood Housing Services of Orange County to first-time homebuyers. When the home is sold or refinanced the loan is repaid and used to assist another family."
