The state of California supported two programs during the COVID-19 pandemic intended to help stabilize households at risk of eviction and homelessness due to job loss and other impacts from the global pandemic.

The California COVID-19 Rent Relief program was a state-wide program operated by HCD that assisted over 371,000 households with more than $4.7 billion in rent and utility assistance during the COVID-19 emergency. Please see the dashboard link below for more data about the program.

ERAP provided funding to local governments to operate local rent relief programs during the COVID-19 pandemic to support housing stability. Please see the links below for more information about ERAP.

ERAP Local Governments

ERAP is for local governments within California seeking Emergency Rental Assistance Funds under California Senate Bill (SB) 91 — from California’s State Rental Assistance Program and/or a block grant.

Tribes

Northern Circle Indian Housing Authority and HCD hosted a Tribal Listening Session on February 25, 2021 for tribes and tribally designated housing entities that applied for US Treasury Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) funding and may be interested in participating in the State’s program.
